If you use AOL's internal browser to view images on the web,
the image quality may be poor. This happens by default because,
behind the scenes,
AOL downloads the images from the web site to their servers, over-compresses
and re-sizes them
(which saves download time but sacrifices image quality), and then
sends them from their servers to your computer.
To correct image over-compression in AOL 6.0:
1. Go to the Settings Menu (4th colorful menu from the left on the
AOL tool bar).
2. Select Preferences.
3. Click on the Internet Properties (WWW) link (4th item down in
the 1st column). This will bring up a gray dialog box with four
tabs at the top.
4. Select the Web Graphics tab.
5. Click the option for Never Compress Graphics.
To correct over-compression in older AOL versions:
1. Go to keyword "preferences" and select Preferences Guide.
2. Select "The Web" and press "3 Set Up Now."
3. Click on the Web Graphics tab.
4. Uncheck the check box on that tab.
Better yet,
once you are connected to AOL, minimize the AOL program and then
launch Netscape, Opera, or Internet Explorer and use one of
those to browse the web. That way you bypass the AOL servers entirely.
You can order Netscape on CD for a minimal cost (the cost of the CD
media and shipping) or download Netscape from
Netscape.com. You can
download Opera from Opera.com. You can
download Internet Explorer from Microsoft.com.
